The federal Head Start program provides grants to local public and private non-profit and for-profit agencies to provide free, comprehensive child development services to economically disadvantaged children and families, with a special focus on helping preschoolers develop the early reading and math skills they need to be successful in school. For residents of the city of Trenton, Head Start services are provided by the Children’s Home Society of Trenton (609/695-6274). For families residing in the rest of Mercer County, Head Start services are provided by the Gateway Community Action Partnership (609/393-5655).
